The precursor of Gd2O3 was synthesized by different methods. The structures, morphologies and size of products were characterized by XRD,thermogravimetric analysis(TG),scanning electron microscope(SEM) and infrared(FTIR). And the influence of synthesis conditions on the morphology and size of the product were discussed. The surface modified Gd2O3 nanoparticles were applied in dyeing of polyester The major contents can be summarized as follows:(1) The precursor of Gd2O3 was synthesized by homogeneous precipitation hydrothermal method using Na2CO3 as a precipitating agent. The experimental results show that micro/nano Gd2(CO3)3·H2O and Gd2O3 with bundle of bowknotlike, a sheet-like bow, half of bowknotlike were controlledly synthesized with the increase of the concentration of Gd(NO3)3·6H2O. The morphology of micro/nano Gd2O3 with very fine rod into short rod were controlledly synthesized with the increase of reaction temperature. The size of the sphere micro/nano Gd2(CO3)3·H2O increased with the increase of reaction temperature. The morphology of micro/nano Gd2O3 with the bundle of bowknotlike and rod were controlledly synthesized with the increase of reaction time.In addition that the morphology of Gd2O3 calcined by its precursor Gd2(CO3)3·H2O were remained the same.(2) The precursors of Gd2O3 were synthesized in reverse microemulsion composed of CTAB, 1-butanol, 1-octane, Gd(NO3)3 brine and ammonia water.The results show that with increase of water nuclear ratio, increasing the volume of water nuclear, micro/nano Gd2O3 particle size will be small amplitude increases; Micro/nano Gd2O3 is octahedral with increasing reaction time; The morphology of Gd2O3 micro/nano particles increased with the reaction temperature from elliptical and cuboid.(3) The surface modified Gd2O3 nanoparticles were applied in dyeing of polyester.Through the dyeing rate and the K/S value,the optimum dyeing recipe is detemined: disperse dye amount is 2 %(o.w.f), agent NNO 0.4 g/L, liquid ratio 50:l,dyeing for 60 min at 120 ?, methylsalicylate : Gd2O3 nano-particles modified(5:1) 6 %.
