Cotton fabric, commonly used in summer, is quite popular with consumers due to its soft hand and wearing comfort properties, while its ultraviolet protection factor(UPF) can not satisfy people’s requirements for summer clothing. Nanometer titanium dioxide dioxide(TiO2)enjoys a wide application in functional finishing of fabric because of its stable chemical properties and the ability to absorb, scatter and reflect ultraviolet light. In this paper, the cotton fiber was in situ deposited with a layer of TiO2 nanoscale film at low temperature to improve its UV resistance property.Nanometer titanium dioxide was obtained at low temperature based with sol-gel process. The properties of the TiO2 prepared by varying the content of nitric acid in the reaction were investigated via X-ray diffraction(XRD), particle size distribution, Zeta potential and UV absorbing property analysis. It was found that anatase titanium dioxide was obtained while the amount of nitric acid was 0.50 ml.Low temperature technology was applied to prepare cotton fabric with TiO2 in situ deposited on the surface. The characterizations were as follows: Scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray fluorescence probe(EDX), Infrared spectroscopy(IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), UV- Vis, TGA, stress- strain curves and K / S value test of cotton fiber after dyeing. It was shown that nanometer titanium dioxide was successfully deposited on the cotton fabric, and the as-obtained cotton fibers present a certain degree of enhancement in thermal properties, mechanical properties and dyeing properties. After curing process, the as-obtained cotton fiber was spun to prepare cotton fabric. The properties of cotton fabric were characterized via ultraviolet resistance, Cotton fabric and UV resistance, wrinkle resistance, mechanical properties and wash durability. It was found that when the content of nitrate was 0.75 ml, reaction temperature was 60 ℃, tetra-n-butyl titanate and deionized water volume ratio was 1:3, the reaction time was 30 min, the corresponding cotton fabric had good anti-UV property and wash durability. This process had no significanteffect on the wrinkle resistance and mechanical properties of cotton fabric. This method was focused on cotton fiber, and then improved the anti-UV property of cotton fabric; TiO2 was deposited on the cotton fiber during its preparation, thus enhanced the interaction between nano-titanium dioxide and cotton fiber. Such an approach directly focused on fiber provides a significant guidance on textile functional finishing.
