Magnesium alloy has attracted more and more attention in the medical metal field as it has the similar mechanical properties with human bone and biodegradable property. This paper focused on the machinability of magnesium and calcium alloy among sorts of magnesium alloys. The preparation and modification of the alloy were studied before research on the machinability of magnesium and calcium alloy. It was found that the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of MgCa0.8 alloy greatly improved after extrusion. The best extrusion process resulted from range analysis of immersion corrosion weight loss, and it was applied to other calcium content alloys.Alloy with 0.4%~ 1.2% elements Ca would be suited as plate material. The influence of cutting speed, feed, axial and radial depth of cut on surface roughness had been analyzed after the orthogonal milling experiments of MgCa0.8 alloy. The influence of cutting parameters on finished surface roughness in the process of milling was as the order:feed rate, radial depth of cut, cutting speed, axial depth of cut, slightly different from the order feed rate, cutting speed, radial depth of cut, axial depth of cut in inverse milling.Finished surface roughness model had been established and verified.Cutting force model had been established and tested, feed rate had the most significant influence on cutting force, followed by the axial cutting depth of cut, cutting speed, radial depth of cut.Mathematical model of the relationship between residual stress of finished surface and cutting speed, feed rate, axial and radial depth of cut had also been established.
