The flake alumina has been widely used for toughness-enhancing matrial,refractory material,abrasives material,pearlescent pigment because of its spcial plate-like structure and excellent physical and chemical stability and optical property.It has an irreplaceable position in the industry,the preparation of specific particle size and morphology of the flaky alumina powder and the research its growth process is of great significance.At present,due to the synthetic inorganic flake powder compared to mica has better uniformity,surface smoothness and particle size control,based on synthetic inorganic flake powder pearlescent pigment is gradually replacing mica titanium pearlescent pigments,wherein the flaky alumina powder is one of the most promising materials.But the domestic research in this area is relatively weak,and the market has not appeared the domestic performance of excellent alumina-based pearlescent pigments,in order to change this phenomenon,the promotion of flake alumina research is essential.In order to obtain uniform alumina powder with large particle size and thin thickness,In this paper,the sol-gel method was used to prepare and study flaky alumina powder,the effect of additives on the crystal growth of alumina was studied by changing the experimental conditions.The experimental results show that the homogeneity of alumina powder prepared by sol-gel method needs to be improved.On the basis of molten salt method,this paper designed a one-step ball milling method to prepare flake alumina powder,alumina powders with average particle size from 2mm to 18 mm were prepared by changing the ratio of alkaline materials.This one-step ball milling method is practical and easy to realize mass production.Since the ball milling method is simple and easy to control,the preparation of flaky alumina powder by ball milling is easier to promote in practical production applications.Then,we carried out the experiment of coating nano titanium dioxide on flake alumina,which made by ourselves.The effects of pH,temperature and the amount of titanium source on the growth of Titanium dioxide were studied.The pearlescent properties of alumina based pearlescent pigment were brief assessment.The superficial morphology,chemical composition,phase structure and particle size of products are characterized by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM),Energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS),X ray diffracmeter(XRD)and laser particle size analyzer.In this paper,the preparation methods and the research on the growth of alumina and titanium dioxide crystals are of great significance to the development of the new generation of pearlescent pigments.
