Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol(methanol tetrahydrofuran)is important a raw material for chemical synthesis and organic solvent and widely used in printing,dyeing,pharmaceutical and coating.The preparation of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol mainly include two methods that catalytic hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol and catalytic hydrogenation of furfural.In addition,the catalyst in this reaction that hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetradrofurfuryl alcohol mainly include the precious metal catalyst,Raney nickel catalyst and modified catalyst.Due to the catalyst in the hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is not widely applied in industry,therefore,in China,the production of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol cannot satisfy the demand.Therefore,this paper mainly studies catalytic hydrogenation process of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.First,various catalysts with different supports and active metallic components were tested in hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.The support of catalyst includes ?-Al2O3,SiO2,H-ZSM-5 and ZrO2,which have different surface properties.And the active components mainly include the non-noble metal Ni,Co and Cu for the consideration of cost.Among all tested catalysts,Ni/y-Al2O3 has the best catalytic performance regards conversion of furfuryl alcohol and selectivity toward tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.Then,a second active metal Co or Cu was added to improve the catalytic performance further.Next,The reaction conditions,including catalyst amount,reaction temperature,reaction pressure,reaction time and stirring rate,were optimized based on catalyst Ni/?-Al2O3 The results show that 99.9%furfuryl alcohol conversion and 99.9%tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol selectivity can be achieved.at 2 h reaction time,80 ?reaction temperature and 4MPa reaction pressure with 15 wt%Ni/?-Al2O3.The recyclability of the catalyst was also studied,however,the result show that the stability of the catalyst need to be improved further.Form the consideration of industrial application,catalytic hydrogenation of furfuryl alcohol to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol was also studied under high furfuryl alcohol concentration in reaction solution with catalyst Ni/?-Al2O3.The effect of Ni loading,furfuryl alchol concentration,catalyst amount,the number of times of filling hydrogen,the ways of charging hydrogen and the recyclability of catalyst were studied systematically under high concentration of furfuryl alcohol.In the end,the results show that the conversion of furfuryl alcohol and the selectivity toward tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol can be up to 99%,at 8 h reaction time,80 ? reaction temperature and 1.5 g catalysts with 25 wt%Ni/?-Al2O3.
