In order to study the gadolinium phosphate glass shielding materials,xGd2O3-(40-x)BaO-60P2O5 and xGd2O3-(50-x)BaO-50P2O5 glass systems have been preared using melt-quenching method.The radiationg shielding properties of glasses have been calculated by using WinXCOM software and Auto-Zeff.The glass structure before and after 60Co gamma ray irradiation were measured by using XRD,Uv-vis-nir,FT-IR,Raman and DSC.The studies have shown that:1.The glass formation range of the glass samples for xGd2O3-(40-x)BaO-60P2O5 series is about 0?x?14 mol%,and the xGd2O3-(50-x)BaO-50P2o5 Series is about 0<x<7.2.The mass attenuation coefficient(?m),effective atomic number(Zeff),half value layer(HVL)and mean free path(MFP)have been calculated by theoretical approach using WinXCOM software and Auto-Zeff.The results show that the shielding properties of two kinds of glass systems were increased with the increase in Gd2O3 concentration.Moreover,xGd2O3-(50-x)BaO-50P2O5 glass systems have better shielding property than standard radiation shielding concres.However,xGd2O3-(40-x)BaO-60P2O5 glass systems have better shielding property than some standard radiation shielding concres except ilmenite concrete.Gd12 and Gd14 glass samples have better shielding property than ilmenite concrete.3.Glass system to visible light transmittance over 80%,the microstructure is predominantly of metaphosphate(Q2)units,minor pyrophosphate(Q1)and orthophosphate(Q0)units.Tg and thermal stability were increased with the increase in Gd2O3 concentration against crystallization.4.The glasses appear color center and as red brown after 2 mrad and 8 mrad gamma rays irradiation,and reduced to visible light transmittance,reduce degree is becoming with gamma ray dose.The transmittance increased with the increase of Gd2O3 content,show Gd2O3 can enhance radiation-hardened properties of barium phosphate glass.Eg were reduced after irradiation,the higher irradiation dose,the smaller Eg.It has been inferred that non-bridge oxygen increased after irradiation.The same spectral features but the intensity of the spectra decreased afert irradiation,such changes are related to changes in the bond angles and/or bond lengths by irradiation,but did not form a new structural unit.Tg were improved after irradiation,which due to the disorderliness of the glass structure improved.
