Aluminum honeycomb sandwich structure is widely used in the field of aerospace,shipbuilding, transportation and machinery for its excellent mechanical properties and cost advantage. Honeycomb sandwich structure is composed by the panels in the up and down side together with honeycomb sandwich in the middle. Because of the hollow structure, it takes big advantage in space efficiency. The design concept was evolved by the bee nest. The honeycomb sandwich structure got the advantages of heat insulation, sound insulation, light weight, high strength good rigidity and so on. It has steady performance too. The sandwich core can be papers, metal, high polymer material and so on. In a real world application, it usually bears out-space loads,mostly impact, so honeycomb structure also takes big advantages in energy absorbing.Using the synthetic method ofboth finite element and experiment, the static and dynamic properties together with the energy absorbing of 3003 aluminum alloy core honeycomb sandwich structure under quasi static pressing and out-of-plane impact load was researched by experiment, and analyzed by FEM. The failure mode and stress distribution during the loading process was analyzed. The strain rate effect of honeycomb sandwich structure and how the geometrical parameters influence the contact force and energy absorbing was discussed. The main contributions of the paper are as follows:Static pressing experiment for different geometrical parameters of honeycomb sandwich structure was done to research the contact force-displacement and stress-strain curve, the failure mode was summarized too. The study found that the stress-stain curve during the loading process can be divided into three parts: elastic compression stage, progressive buckling stage and densification stage. Among which, the progressive buckling stage absorb the most amount of energy during the compression. The out-of-plane impact experiment of honeycomb sandwich structure was done by Hopkinson pressure bar system With different strain rate the yield stress is much different, which shows obvious strain rate effect.Using the Abaqus to build the experiment model analyze the progress. With control varietal method, conclusions has been found: keep the other parameters still, when the wall thickness and the side ratio of core grow, the yield stress and the energy which absorbed by the structure grow too, but the situation of different extending-angel is much more complex.The response of honeycomb sandwich structure under shock load was researched by drop impact test. The depth and area of the dent by different height was tested and element modal was founded to analyze the stress contribution and contact force-time curve.
