Tobacco flavors and fragrances which have been widespread used in tobacco industry, are important tobacco additives used to guarantee good smell and taste of tobacco. It is one of the key factors for cigarettes productions.Tobacco flavors and fragrances normally contains complex components, and their quality are depended on the source of raw materials and produce process.GC methods are not suitable for analysis of tobacco flavors and fragrances, due to their high boiling points. Thus,it is necessary and meaningful to establish a reliable HPLC method for quality control. In this thesis,a HPLC-DAD method is established to detect the components of tobacco flavors and fragrances. The gradient condition was optimized and a suitable ultraviolet wavelength was selected. Then chromatographic fingerprints are established,to distinguish the simulated unqualified samples, combined with pattern recognition.HPLC fingerprints of 12 different tobacco flavors and fragrances were obtained, including low viscosity, medium viscosity and high viscosity samples. The different batches of each sample all show high similarity in their chromatograms. Therefore, this method can be used in determination and quality control of tobacco flavors&fragrances with different viscosity.Heating-damage and spiked samples were analyzed as simulated unqualified samples to examine the credibility and practical application value of HPLC fingerprints. The results show that simulated unqualified samples can be distinguished by HPLC fingerprints, when combined with pattern recognition.Hence, the fingerprints are credibility and practical applicability.DAD and MS detector were also used to take qualitative analysis for components in tobacco flavors and fragrances, and the results show that most of the flavors and fragrances are contains glucosidal compounds, which are high boiling point components. This also confirms the fact that HPLC method is necessary in tobacco flavors and fragrances detection and quality control.
