As the economic develops rapidly, the demand for iron ore is rising.After minerals exploitation, due to the failure to deal with the mining area and geological activity, result in many cavities around the ore district. The existence of a large number of cavity have a serious impact on the normal production and living activities and the surrounding environment of the mining area, cause great security risks to local residents. In order to protect the reasonable exploitation of resources and ecological environment and people's property security, need an efficient, accurate, convenient operation, low cost detection means,application of ground penetrating radar technology can solve the problem well.Various shallow cavities of ore are simulated by using the finite difference time domain method, based on Maxwell equations.Maxwell's equation are used FDTD to transform from differential to difference algorithm, and gradually realize the solution of electromagnetic field simulation. In the simulation, the Ricker wavelet is used as the excitation source. A variety of common cavity is established, and the corresponding simulation program is compiled. The data was imported into Matlab software, in order to solve the electromagnetic field of cavity. The characteristics of ground penetrating radar wave field in difference areas are obtained, which can be used as a guide for the detection of cavities.Taking the shallow cavity exploration of Zichuan iron mine as an example, the paper analyzes the main parameters setting, the line layout,data acquisition and data interpretation of the ground penetrating radar.Take out some typical cavity detection results from engineering practice,combined with the numerical simulation of cavity of GPR wave field characteristics and the geological interpretation of the images,successful delineated the surrounding cavity of the mining area. The results show that the ground penetrating radar technology can adapt to the complex geological conditions, and it is more reliable for the detection of shallow cavity.
