Magneto-optical glasses have received more attention due to their specific Faraday effect, which make them an attractive candidate for optical isolation, optical switching, optical fiber communication system, fiber sensor, etc.Recently,Chalcogenide glasses have attracted a great deal of interests in the field of magneto-optical material owing to their excellent properties, including but not limited to relatively wide transmission in infrared band,Verdet constant is independent of temperature, easy fabrication of optical fiber and optical waveguide, etc. In this paper,a series of glasses of the Ge S2-Ga2S3?Ge S2-Ga2S3-Pb I2 and Ge S2-Ga2S3-Sb?In?2S3 were prepared by melt-quenching method. The relationship between the composition, structure, physical properties and optical properties of the sulfur-based glasses and the Verdet constant was systematically studied. As a result, ions possessing similar electronic structure with s2-sp transitions are responsible for large Verdet constant, and Becquerel rule is proved to be an effective guidance for estimating the Verdet constant and further optimizing the compositions in chalcogenide glasses. One composition glass,i.e.80Ge S2·20Sb2S3 was found to have the largest Verdet constant(V=0.184 min·G-1·cm-1,@980nm)and best figure of merit(FOM=11.22 min·G-1,@980 nm)in these glasses. The Verdet constant of the chalcogenide glasses was measured at different temperatures, and the result was that the Verdet constant have relatively low intrinsic temperature coefficient and was consistent with the theoretical explanation.
