As one of the earliest industrialized synthetic resins, phenolic resin has various advantages, such as the low price of raw materials, facile production process and good chemical stability and so on.These make it be widely applied in many industries.Phenolic foam made from the phenolic resin,a rigid polymer product, with excellent properties of light,non-toxic,resistant to fire, strong chemical stability and is an ideal material for building insulation usage. But there are some defects such as the surface powdering, poor mechanical properties and other shortcomings to limit its wider industrial applications.Firstly, this paper studied the preparation of high-quality phenolic resin in a static mixing reactor which was first developed by the author.Effect of the preparation parameters on the properties of phenolic resin was investigated and optimal synthetic condition was obtained as follows: ratio of phenol to aldehyde 1:1.3,reaction temperature 70?,catalyst dosage of 6.0%of the mass of phenol input, reactants mixture flow rate of 5.5L/h,at this condition. The mass quality of phenolic resin prepared was 3.15% of free phenol,0.18% of free aldehyde,87.0% of solid content and 9.67% of water, with viscosity of 3200 cps, which are all superior to the quality of phenolic resin prepared by present methods. Then, this article studied the phenolic foam preparation with above-made phenolic resin as the main raw material, the effect of the surface active agent, foaming agent, curing agent and reinforcing agent on the foamed phenolic resin was investigated. The experimental results show that phenolic foam with density of 60 kg/m3 and compression strength of 0.25 MPa can be prepared at proper condition. Its quality is better than that of phenolic foam from the traditional prepared phenolic resin.
