Amber is the resin of coniferous and leguminous plants in the period from Mesozoic Cretaceous to Cenozoic tertiary. It is a ki nd of natural or ganic compounds formed by complex geological and petrochem ical processes.Amber stone usually has dif ferent color and transparency even from the same area,an d the dif ference in color, transparency and gemmological characteristics of the am ber from different origins is more obvious. In this paper, amber samples from different area were used as the research object.Their basic gemological characteristics and inclusions characteristics were studied by different methods, such as refractom eter, density tester and u ltraviolet fluorescence instrument, and their spectroscopy characterist ics were tested by infrared spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy and UV spectrophotometry. Then, carbon functional groups and molecular characteristics of organic matter in amber were analyzed by com paring our results with previous research.A variety of different origin gemmological and spectral characteristics of am ber from different areas were obtained th rough a quantitative comparative analysis research on the stability, maturity, symmetry and oxidation degree, which can provide scientific basis for the further study on amber.Com pared with the characteristics of amber,it can not onl y enrich the exis ting theoretical knowledge, instru ctive to the m arket. On one hand,m any research and identification on ge ms can draw lessons from the m ethod of a mber research in this paper, thus widen the identify way of other gems.On the other hand,it has great ef fect on the promotion of amber m arket because of the enrichm ent and the d evelopment of amber research. Moreover,it can ef fectively prevent and control on th e circulation of some artificial ambers, and benefit the orderly development of the market.
