We conducted a transient experimental investigation of steam–water direct contact condensation in the absence of non-condensable gas, which achieved the rapidly recovering steam.A new analysis method of steam state equation has been applied to analyze the molar quantity change of steam in the course of the experiment, and at the same time, expanding the database of steam-water direct contact condensation. These experiments were carried out in a laboratory scale column(325-mm inner diameter and 1045 mm in height),and we investigated the influence of cooling water flow rates and temperatures on steam condensation efficiency in the empty tower and packed column, respectively. The experimental results showed that increasing the cooling water flow rate properly can significantly accelerate the steam condensation rate and this was more obvious at the beginning of the operation, which indicated the higher thermal convection between the steam and cooling water at higher cooling water flow rate.It can be also concluded that the effect of changing the cooling water temperature on steam condensation is little. But lower cooling water temperature has a positive impact on steam condensation. As for the performance of empty tower and packed tower to quickly handle the steam, when the cooling water flow rate increased to a certain value, the empty tower was better than that of packed tower in dealing with water vapor. The results obtained provide a proper method for rapidly recovering steam.
