Since the apearance of metamaterial,many strange electromagnetic properties have been revealed,including backward wave properties,inverse Doppler effect,perfect lens effect et al.Metamaterial structure is widely used in microwave devices and a variety of antenna design.With the development of the military and the continuous improvement of the quality of life,the requirements for the microstrip antenna technology are also getting higher and higher,and the proportion of the demand for the miniaturized antenna is increasing.After years of research and discovery,researchers in many countries have found lots of ways to reduce the size of traditional microstrip antennas.Although many of them can reduce the size of traditional microstrip patch antennas in an extent,they can affect other radiation properties.At present,although the metamaterial structure is widely used in antenna design,the potential for application in the miniaturization and improvement of the antenna structure has not been fully utilized.In this paper,we design a miniaturized microstrip antenna based on metamaterial structure and study the influence of metamaterial structure on other performance of the antenna.By introducing a metamaterial structure in the microstrip antenna structure design,the performance of the microstrip antenna is effectively improved.The main work of the paper has the following sections:First,the research status of metamaterials structure and the research and development of miniaturized microstrip antennas are briefly introduced.The theory of metamaterials and the singular electromagnetic properties are described,and the future prospects of metamaterials structure are prospected.Second,the method of extracting the equivalent parameters of metamaterial structure is introduced in detail.And two metamaterial unit structures are designed and their equivalent parameters are extracted to verify the feasibility of the equivalent parameter extraction method.The effects of structural parameters on the properties of metamaterials,the results show that the resonance point and the negative magnetic properties of the metamaterial structure can be adjusted by changing the size of the opening,the width of the copper ring and the dielectric constant of the dielectric substrate.Third,the basic principle and design method of microstrip antenna are described.A circular single-opening resonant ring with metamaterials at 4.5GHz is designed and introduced into the microstrip antenna for miniaturization microstrip antenna.The results show that the patch size of the microstrip antenna is reduced by 54.24%compared with that of the traditional microstrip antenna by loading the circular single-opening resonant ring structure,and the radiation performance such as gain and directivity remains basically unchanged.
