A large number of low-grade vanadium-titanium magnetite deposits with weathering have been found in the western Liaoning of China.Furthermore,the grades of V2O5 and TiO2 in titanomagnetite concentrates obtained from this area are over 1% and 14% respectively,which have an extremely high utilization value for smelting.This work focused on the application of gravity and magnetic separation technology to recover titanomagnetite concentrates and pre-concentrate rough concentrates of ilmenite which provided high quality raw materials for flotation and electrostatic separation from low-grade vanadium-titanium magnetite ore in the western Liaoning of China,based on a mineralogical study.The main results are as follows:The content of metallic minerals in raw sample is less than 10%.Secondary changes of the titanomagnetite were very strong,and most of the titanomagnetite experienced varying degrees of alteration.The replacement of titanomagnetite by martite and sphene are the two main alteration types.The replacement of titanomagnetite by martite weakens its susceptibility,resulting in that it is difficult to be separated by low-intensity magnetic separation.The replacement of titanomagnetite by sphene makes that the intergrowth relationship between titanomagnetite and sphene is very complex,and the grain size of sphene is generally fine.Obviously,sphene cannot be completely liberated even by fine grinding.However,the content of V2O5,TiO2,CaO and Si O2 in sphene is higher than that in titanomagnetite,resulting in titanomagnetite concentrates with the characteristics of “high vanadium and titanium content” and “high calcium and silicon content”.The combined process with gravity and magnetic separation was used for pre-discarding tailing from the tailing of low-intensity magnetic separation.It can not only discard some gangue minerals,but also has an good effect on removing montmorillonite and biotite.Thus,the ilmenite can be better enriched.After the pre-concentration process of “Pre-discarding tailing by high-intensity magnetic separation-Grinding-Low-intensity magnetic separation-Pre-discarding tailing by gravity separation-high-intensity magnetic separation”,titanomagnetite concentrates with 1.21% V2O5 grade,22.22% TiO2 grade,42.51% TFe grade,42.13% V2O5 recovery,24.23% TiO2 recovery and 9.00% TFe recovery,and rough concentrates of ilmenite with 0.104% V2O5 grade,22.74% TiO2 grade,26.54% TFe grade,5.21% V2O5 recovery,34.68% TiO2 recovery and 7.88% TFe recovery were obtained from a low-grade vanadium-titanium magnetite ore which contained 0.050% V2O5,1.67% TiO2 and 8.53% TFe.
