With the construction of strong and smart grid and the rapid development of power system, the application of FACTS devices will become more popular and widely. Various of FACTS can realize stable voltage, improve the transmission capability, control power flow and other control functions. So the research on the optimal allocation of FACTS devices is has very important practical significance. The model of FACTS is the foundation of research on optimal allocation of FACTS devices. According to the characteristics of the typical FACTS devices(SVC and TCSC), the steady state model of FACTS device is constructed. On the basis of it, the analysis of power flow calculation with FACTS model, provides theoretical foundation for the following. As a starting point, this paper carries out the research on the method of optimal FACTS devices:.In order to optimize the distribution of power flow, a methodology that can be able to optimize the distribution of power flow with SVC and TCSC. By the concept of the power flow entropy, the flow distribution can be rationalized. The modified group searcher optimization(GSO) algorithm is proposed, in which the angle search is combined with chaotic search model to avoid jumping into local optimization. Compared with the different optimal allocation of multi-FACTS devices, the optimal allocation of multi-FACTS devices is achieved under the economic constraints. The locations obtained by this method can achieve the purpose of balancing power flow and enhancing the system performances. The simulation studies are demonstrated on an IEEE 118-bus power system with two classical types of FACTS. The simulation results show that the proposed method is feasible and effective. In order to improve the transmission capacity and voltage stability, a methodology considering N-1 contingency analysis, is proposed for location and capacity of SVC. Based on N-1 Contingency Analysis which can find the potential fault factors and sort the lines, and then by continuation power flow calculation, the optimal location can be get by comparing the results. Finally, this method is applied on the 14-bus power system to test by Power System Analysis Toolbox(PSAT), and it is feasibility and effectiveness. In this paper, based on the typical FACTS devices(SVC and TCSC), two different optimal allocation methods are proposed, which can provide certain reference for the optimal allocation of other FACTS devices in power system.
