With the energy requirement of people is further rising,scientists explore the oceans at greater depths than ever before and shipping industry is attached more and more importance by most countries. As the ship's power heart, a marine diesel engine is the basic guarantee for the safe and reliable operation of a ship and also the major cause of failure. Thus, it is very necessary to monitor the diesel engine effectively and in time.Considering the development history of integrated monitoring and controlling system, we start from the actual situation and in order to do our best to narrow the gap with international high levels. This paper takes MAN B&W 6L16/24 medium speed diesel engine of the ship as the experimental subject and implements the monitoring system for the medium-speed marine diesels. The main contents researched in this paper are as follows:1. The total design of monitoring system: Based on the development and trend of marine diesel engine monitoring system, this paper proposes one new solution to design monitoring system, designing the hardware architecture and software architecture of all the related units.2. Hardware design of marine diesel engine monitoring system: According to the functions of hardware, we divided the hardware into several modules. What's more, we adopt uniform design for the modules which have the same functions and different design for the other. Hardware schematic diagram is given and simple introductions about the designed modules are presented.3. Software design of marine diesel engine monitoring system: In view of the software requirements of the three main modules, we provided software design flow charts and analyze the software design of each module. For the communication process of the whole system, we discussed communication design of different modules in detail.4. The research of a feasible plan for the monitoring system designed by this paper to process fault diagnose: According to the specific condition of diesel engine, this paper analyzes a feasible plan combined with the expert system of diesel fault diagnosis and fuzzy diagnosis strategy. This paper briefly introduces the specific function of each module and flow chart of the feasible plan.5. The confirmatory tests for the local monitoring and alarm system are completed. The system is tested on NI virtual instrument and MAN B&W 6L16/24 medium speed diesel engine.
