The starter/generator system combines the starter and the generator, and it aroused widespread concerns. Two stage matrix converter is a novel AC-AC converter with the feature of compact size, adjustable input power factor and bidirectional power flow. TSMC is used in starter/generator system to improve reliability and power density. It became a significant research hotspot of the starter/ generator system.Firstly, the basic principles of the starter/generator system based on a two stage matrix converter(TSMC-S/G system) are demonstrated in this paper, including the principles of the two stage matrix converter and the hybrid excitation synchronous machine. The Matlab/Simulink simulation model of the system is also illustrated. Then, the start control strategy of the system is studied, and the space vector control strategy is used to realize starting operation. In order to suppress the disturbance which is caused by DC-bus voltage fluctuations due to no energy storage components, the appropriate repetitive controller is designed. To solve the commutation problem caused by the motor’s power factor angle larger than 30°, the current states of the active vectors in a sector are analyzed, and a feasible modulation strategy is proposed to ensure that the current circulation loop always exists in the system. According to different topologies of TSMC-S/G system at starting and generating states, the operating conditions of each component of the system at switching from starting operation to generating operation are analyzed, and a feasible starting/generating switch scheme is given. Finally, an experimental platform of TSMC-S/G system is established, and the designs of hardware and software are introduced. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper is validated by simulation and experimental results.
