Transmission Line Icing has been a difficult problem to be solved in power system, Icing cause severe circuit overload, dancing and so on, which result in disconnection, blackouts, the tower collapsed, brownout and other accidents, it will poses a serious impact on national product. At home and abroad for transmission Lines various methods were proposed for deicing, some were poor ice removal and some were considered the economy and security and difficult to apply to practical. In this paper, we got an in-depth study of the principle of promising efficient melting ice and reactive power compensation dual purpose of MMC-STATCOM DC ice-melting device, to achieve practical system. This paper introduces the overhead icing situation, hazards and the existing method of deicing, in the analysis and comparison of several newly proposed deicing device, MMC-STATCOM DC ice-melting device has a greater advantage in technology, economy and efficiency. The device combines the flexibility of a voltage source converter and the convenience of chain structures, etc. In this paper, the working principle of the melting ice and the reactive power compensation circuit was depth studied; the mathematical structure was built by DQ transformation. Focus on dual-loop modulation, zero-sequence voltage injection modulation, module voltage equalization, circulation suppression, operation principle and control process of reactive power compensation and DC melting ice, so that target function could be completed. In this paper, the device used SIMULINK toolbox of MATLAB to start charging process, the ice melting characteristics and compensation characteristics were simulated separately, the effectiveness verify the device.
