The overhead travelling and gantry cranes are one of the special equipments with the most widely used in the development of national economy, the maximum likelihood and the most serious consequences of the accidents. Inspection technology is one of the important technical means of the crane accidental prevention. The traditional inspection of cranes mainly adopts the routine inspection based on relevant national regulations and the inspection cycle is developed from engineering experience. It is likely to cause excessive inspection for general equipment and less inspection for high-risk equipment.The relevant historical data like design, use, maintenance of the overhead travelling and gantry cranes is collected in Lingyuan Iron & Steel and Anshan Iron & Steel. The FMEA table is established and the FMEA analysis of the overhead travelling and gantry cranes is completed based on the existing research. The qualitative risk evaluation of the parts of overhead travelling and gantry cranes is formulated based on RBI methodology to determine the level of risk for all parts. According to the characteristics of our equipment, the formula for calculating probability of consequences is redefined referring to the coefficient correction and the correction coefficient is calculated by the use of multi-level gray comprehensive evaluation technology. Finally quantitative risk assessment model of overhead travelling and gantry cranes is built combining with the economic results of the consequences evaluation. The risk acceptance criterion of overhead travelling and gantry cranes is formulated referring to the ALARP principle. Combined with the real-time risk evaluation results and characteristics of the crane parts, the management measure is implemented and the dynamic inspection program is formulated. The software of risk assessment system of overhead travelling and gantry cranes is developed with Acess and VB. It can automatically complete the organizational structure management of the parts of overhead travelling and gantry cranes, FMEA analysis and qualitative and quantitative risk assessment of Crane Parts. It also can automatically generate the security assessment report as word form and give the corresponding inspection and maintenance recommendations. Technicians use this software to complete risk assessment and management of overhead travelling and gantry cranes accurately and quickly.This paper proposes a method of assessment and management of overhead travelling and gantry cranes, gives the specific step of risk assessment and the developing process of risk management strategies and works out software of risk assessment. This study has the important theoretical significance and engineering application value for the safety evaluation and accident prevention of cranes.
