Flow field around a circular pile and turbulence characteristics of the current are investigated by using the combination methods of numerical simulation and physical model. First, related work on the experimental measurements and numerical study of flow field around a circular pile and turbulence characteristics is briefly reviewed. Instantaneous velocity of different cross-sections around a cylinder based on smooth bed in a steady current is then measured by using Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Time averaging velocities, turbulence velocity and intensity, Reynolds stress along the flow direction and cross-sections are investigated by using statistical theory and dynamics of turbulence. Finally, Three-dimensional model of flow around a cylinder is built and investigated by RNG turbulence model in Flow-3D. The simulation results are compared with physical model to research flow and turbulence characteristics around a circular pile in a steady current.The horseshoe vortex and lee-wake vortex flow processes around the pile are analysed.
