Color sand has an important position in the field of modern building decoration. However, mineral resource of natural color sand was exploited less and less, and it will be exhausted. Artificial color sand become more and more popular, and has been already developed, but the most studies just are limited to preparation methods. Based on practice application of color sand, artificial color sand of market has not been widely applied to replace natural color sand because of its poor abrasive resistance. Artificial color sand was prepared by polymerization and calcination methods, respectively, and Impact of factor of abrasive resistance was explored. The preliminary process design was made based on the application.Water-borne epoxy resin was prepared via phase-reversion method. Artificial colour sand was synthesized by mixing iron oxide red, quartz sand and curing agent with water-borne epoxy resin as binder. The result shows that chromatic aberration of the as-prepared sand is obvious after abrasive resistance test which means abrasive resistance is poor, and SEM indicates that there exists a large amount of pigment agglomerates on the surface of quartz particles. The pigment was pretreated by adding dispersant sodium oleate in the pigment slurry. XRD analysis shows that there is no structural change of pigment after adding SO (sodium oleate), but the value of Zeta potential of particle surface becomes more negative, and the average particle size is reduced obviously, meanwhile the abrasive resistance of colour sand is enhanced greatly. SEM indicates that the amount of pigment agglomerates is obviously reduced, and the agglomerates are evenly dispersed, which can be regarded as a vital factor to enhance the abrasive resistance of artificial colour sand.Phosphate adhesive was synthesized via phosphoric acid and aluminium hydroxide reaction in environment of 90-100 ℃ hot water. Color sand was prepared by mixing different pigments, quartz sand, phosphate adhesive and fluxing agent, via 600 ℃ calcinations. Color sand prepared with the small particle exhibits good abrasion resistance, which is due to the fact that small particle has soft agglomeration whose structure is incompact. It was easily dispersed in the process of mixing, which increase s the contact area with pigments, phosphate adhesive and quartz sand, and makes full use of character of phosphate adhesive. The abrasion resistance of prepared color sand is good, which can realize industrialized production and replace the natural color sand to meet the market demand.Based on the requirement of market for abrasion resistance of artificial color sand, the preliminary process design, technical, economic analysis and environmental evaluation was made for the calcination colour sand.
