Since the river system is closely related to human activities, the exploration of river deformation characteristics is one of the major problems when recognizing and modifying natural rivers, and investigations on the pattern characteristics have become an important part of the researches in this area.Flow would be compliance with the law of resistance during its travelling, and the macro manifestation would be varied based on its surrounding environment. The law of resistance determines the river's deformation characteristics, which in turn reflects the law of resistance. In this article we considered a variety of factors that affect the river's hydraulic loss, and obtained the related law of resistance by introducing a dimensionless deformation parameter. It was found that the river deformation parameter, which was deduced from the law of resistance, could be used to classify river pattern. Also we reclassified river pattern with the effects of geomorphology taken into consideration. To testify the accuracy of the classification method in this article, we used two different tests: one is the typical data set test from previous documentation; the other is the laboratory test. From the comparison of the original river type and the new one conducted from the classification method based on the law of resistance of natural rivers, it could be found that they match quite well with each other although there are few biased data. After analyzing the detailed reasons, the advantages of this method here would be further improved. The application results show that the classification method proposed is simple and effective with Incoherent Rivers.
