Following the computer, network and digital mobile communication technologies, the sensor network is another significant fruit of IT revolution. As a representative of sensor network technology, WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) finds wide applications in medical studies, industrial control, national defense, environment, intelligent traffic, etc. With deeper exploration of WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) by researchers and rapid development of mechanical sensors, WSN technology's role in the smart grid is increasingly important. Nowadays, the smart grid, a complex integrated system, has become the direction of power systems around the world. To realize it, real-time online monitoring and information control of power generation, transformation, transmission, distribution and other stages in power grid is of fundamental necessity. While WSN technology, the sensory nerve endings of intelligent information network, proves to be the key technology to the construction and development of smart grid. This paper studies the monitoring system in the smart substation on the basis of WSN technology. Firstly, it focuses on the specific applications of WSN in smart substations based on the analysis of the background and significance of the research; Secondly, it elaborates the key technique involved in the utilization of WSN in the smart Substation; Thirdly, it analyzes and studies the routing mechanism of WSN's communication in the smart substation; lastly, it put forwards the application design of WSN in the monitoring system of HV(High Voltage) equipments in smart substations. The study shows the intelligent monitoring system based on WSN, with broad application to explore, achieves easy and smart surveillance of substation equipments. The proposed improved routing mechanism and wireless overall monitoring scheme can be served as reference for substation monitoring systems to a certain degree.
