Several factors contribute to the vitality loss of many commercial complex in China, including the excess inventory of commercial complex, the change of public spending patterns, and the ever-increasingly severe homogenized competition. In this study, revitalization-related theories are introduced, which are integrated with interviews, observation, and questionnaire of commercial complex to investigate the factors that result in the vitality insufficiency. Eventually, optimization design strategy for commercial complex is proposed. In the theory introduction stage, this study comprehensively explains the implementation principle and evaluation index of the revitalization, and clearly pinpoints that human activities and spaces are the two vitality composition factors, based on which the questionnaire is designed. Through the induction and summary of research results, four factors are identified to influence the vitality of the commercial complex, namely the commercial activity, space, traffic and physical environment. Then survey data results are analyzed from the perspective of revitalization to further provide guidance basis for the revitalization design of the commercial complex. Design strategies corresponding to the four above mentioned aspects are proposed, including the improvement of the adaptability of commercial activities, optimization of the space quality, enhancement of the traffic flow, and elevation of the physical environment.Eventually, the optimized design strategies for the revitalization of the commercial complex are put into practice in the reconstruction and optimization project of the Shanghai No.6 Department Store, hoping to provide some theoretical and practical references for the revitalization optimization design of the commercial complex in China.
