In order to research the dynamic performance of the hydraulic chain tensioner, a varying bulk modulus is introduced and the dynamic mathematical model of the automotive tensioner is established considering the air ratio and compressibility of the hydraulic oil firstly. Then, dynamic simulation is conducted using the AVL Excite_TD to verify the correctness of the established model and it utilizes the energy dissipation efficiency and peak damping force as two evaluation indicators. Finally, the influences of the air ratio of hydraulic oil and the volume of the tensioner are studied as well.In order to develop the digital design system of tensioner the dynamic mathematical model of the automotive tensioner with torsional spring were established firstly, and it is used to analyze influences of parameters of the thread and spring after being verified by thrust experiment. Then, requirements analysis and hierarchy analysis are conducted for the digital design system, which interface design is base on. Finally, secondary developments about SolidWorks and ACCESS are utilized with Visual Basic. The results indicate that a rational design of the air ratio of hydraulic oil, as well as the volume of high pressure chamber and the adjuster of the tensioner, can effectively increase the dynamic performance of the hydraulic chain tensioner; the digital design system of tensioner with functions like design of key parameters, reconstruction of 3D model, save of data and documents can manage to achieve variant design with different requirements of output performances to improve design efficiency of the tensioner.
