The shallow rectangular footing that adjacent to slope is a common form of foundation. In many construction engineering, it is often to encounter the situations that need to put the foundation on the top of slope or on the slope, and that need to put the foundation beside the foundation pits that plan to excavate or have been excavated, such as it is often to need to build some buildings or structures on the slopes or near the slopes in some mountainous cities; sometimes we have to build the abutments, piers or tower foundations on the slope or near the slope that of the bridge across the valley and the electric transmission lines. At present, there is still no clear calculating formula in the current specification that about the special case mentioned above. Therefore, with the widely application of the shallow rectangular footing foundations that adjacent to slope in all kinds of engineering structures, it has important theoretical significance and engineering practical significance to carry out research failure mode and bearing capacity calculation method suited to the engineering characteristics.Carrying out small scale model tests in the sandbox to preliminary exploration in the integral failure mode of slope foundation that under the action of rectangular static load. Establishing large size homogeneous soil slope foundation model, and imposing load to the experimental models through the static loading device gradually, to further study the bearing mechanism, failure mechanism and stress distribution characteristics of rectangular footings adjacent to slope.Conducting simulation analysis to rectangular foundation that adjacent to slope through the large-scale finite element analysis software ABAQUS, to further explore the internal mechanical characteristics, deformation characteristics and failure modes of rectangular foundation that adjacent to slope, and test the correctness of the test results. Meanwhile, establishing rectangular foundation analysis model that adjacent to slope of different conditions, to make parameter sensitivity analysis to slope distance and the ratio ? that of length to width of the foundation.Based on relevant research result, further studying the failure mechanism of the rectangular foundation that adjacent to slope on the theoretical research level, and a three-dimensional and bilateral failure mode is established, which fully considered the influence of the shear strength of inside soil of the foundation and the double asymmetrical features. Moreover, a simplified method of construction of the rigid-motion blocks collapse mechanism was proposed, which could not only effectively reflect the three-dimensional end effect but also avoid complex coordinate and surface integral calculation, and it is more convenient for practical engineering. Then, based on the failure mode, the upper limit analysis theory was introduced and a new analysis approach of ultimate bearing capacity of rectangular footing adjacent to slope was put forward, and the solving of the bearing capacity could be realized by using the SQP optimization theory. Finally, the feasibility and rationality of the research approach in the paper is showed through comparison and analysis with current research and the ABAQUS finite element numerical analysis results.
