Airbag is an important assist device to save the life of the occupants in a collision accident. When a frontal impact occurred, it can effectively reduce the casualty rate with the use of safety belt. In order to improve the protective effect of the airbag in small overlap impact accident and make it more suitable for the complex reality collision, this paper presents a new method to control the intelligent airbag, and the reliability of the algorithm is verified by experiments.Firstly, the advantages and disadvantages of the type features of small overlap impact accident and the traditional airbag control algorithm are analyzed, and the two stage fuzzy Collision identify algorithm based on Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System is proposed. According to a small overlap impact finite element model which is established, three kinds of characteristic parameters are obtained:the velocity variation, the main force direction and the length ratio of acceleration. Then the three characteristic parameters are used as fuzzy input of the two stage fuzzy air bag control algorithm, and the performance of the algorithm is improved by training the suitable fuzzy membership function and fuzzy rules with ANFIS. This paper aim at the developed two stage fuzzy airbag control algorithm, the length ratio of velocity and the main force direction are selected as the fuzzy input variables of the algorithm, comparing with the algorithm proposed in this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of the different feature parameters as the input variable of the airbag algorithm in the identification of the collision types are analyzed. The real-time of the two stage fuzzy airbag algorithm based on ANFIS system is verified.Then, an intelligent airbag controller is designed based on the type of collision detection algorithm, image recognition and fusion body pressure distribution crew classification algorithm. When the collision accident is identified as a type of small overlap impact accident and over the airbag trigger threshold, it will play the best protection for occupants with expanding the front passenger airbag and side curtain airbag in the best time simultaneously and matching the shape of the airbag reasonably.Finally, the test of vehicle verification is carried out combined with the characteristics of the intelligent airbag algorithm proposed in this paper and the existing equipment in our laboratory. The airbag can accurately identify the type of impact and initiating condition which providing the best protection for the occupants, and it is good to verify the effectiveness and reliability of the intelligent airbag algorithm proposed in this paper.
