With the improving of people’s living standard, the automobilemanufacturers are increasing. The emergence of all kinds of cheap car,make car ownership increased year by year, the vehicle crash accidentalso increase. To classify various type of vehicle crash accident, basicallycan be divided into the following types: frontal impact, offset impact, sideimpact, and rear impact, etc. How to protect the vehicle occupants duringthe impact? That is one of the main of today’s automobile research.In recent10years, traffic accident data shows that the side impactmortality is the highest of all the impact. The side impact is ranked in thefirst place. Therefore, improving on the car side impact constraint systemfor occupant protection becomes the focus of the passive safety researchtopic.The main research content of this article is according to onepassenger vehicle of development objectives. The project is required tomeet the side impact of C-NCAP requirements, and meet the side impactof Euro-NCAP. At the same time, the side airbag simulation analysis ofthe development is according to the draft of GB/T "Automobile Side PoleImpact of Occupant Protection". Firstly, the simulation analysis and testresult have to be compared. The parameters of comparison is includingthe shape of the bag, the volume of gas inflator, ignition time and fullfiling time etc. The protected area, the shape, the size and the folding method of side airbag and curtain airbag, are defined by the high speedcamera video analysis from the distance of dummy and vehicle trim infoundation test data; The thickness of the airbag is defined by the dummyhead, rib, and abdomen relative distance to the door and trims; Theignition time of airbag is defined by the dummy data from the foundationtest such as head acceleration, chest displacement and abdomen; The gasinflator relate parameter is defined by the airbag volume; Theexperimental results and according to the pressure vessel for standardwith simulation data, to verify this generator parameters, complete thepreliminary development of airbag; According to the tank test result, andcomparing with simulation result, the gas inflator parameter would befixed and completed the preliminary development of airbag. Secondly,the side airbags and curtain airbag simulation model are completed byLS-DYNA software for simulation, and the method of VC simulation.The preliminary side airbags and curtain airbags would be in trialproduction, and would be compared the shape of simulation model to thetrail production samples in static deployment test. The simulationsoftware LS-DYNA is used in the established simulation model of airbagdevelopment such as vehicle body model, seat model, seatbelt model,mobile deformation barrier model and the resistant system model.According to the C-NCAP50km/h side impact foundation test result andthe mark performance in such as head HIC, rib displacement, and abdomen force, the four different types airbag proposal are designed andsimulated. Base on the comparison of simulation and testing, the optimaldecision of airbag is defined. With the purpose to analyze the simulationof the side airbag in C-NCAP side impact, Euro-NCAP side pole impactand the GB/T "Automobile Side Pole Impact of Occupant Protection", aconclusion of the side airbag whether meet the regulation or protocolwould be provided. Finally, the validation test would be conducted andverified for the relevant laws and regulations.Base on the thorax and abdomen side airbag and head curtain airbagdevelopment for a type of passenger vehicle, this article introduces theside airbags and curtain airbag development process, and uses the CAEsimulation decreasing the development cost and compression thedevelopment term. The test result is quite acceptable and the side airbagprotected performances meet the development requirements.
