Ball mills are widely used as an important equipment in powder processing. Mechanism of ordinary ball mills can't overcome the weakness of high power and steel consumption. So The flutter ball mill is designed, the cylinder of which is coupled with up and down vibration on the basis of ordinary ball mills' rotation motion. The new complex motion is aimed to improve the grinding performance. This article focuses on medium's collision energy characteristics and grinding performance of the flutter ball mill.First of all, based on basic theory of particle breakage and the population balance modeling, the mathematical relationship of collision energy and particle breakage rate was analyzed. The ?600×900mm scale test flutter ball mill was made as test platform. The flutter ball mill and ordinary ball mill under three different rotational rates were simulated in EDEM software. Through the numerical analysis of collision energy characteristics of the flutter ball mill, it comes to these conclusion. Besides the rotation of cylinder bringing the medium to cascade and cataract, the vibration of cylinder also brings medium to cataract. The total collision energy change regularly according to vibration period, it decreases as the cylinder goes downwards and increases as the cylinder goes upwards. The flutter ball mill and ordinary ball mill's main collision energy level is focused on 0.0001 J and 0.001 J. The impact is the main mechanism of comminuting and it mainly occurs during rising stage of the cylinder. A grinding experiment was carried out according to simulation. Through the electron microscope observation and screening results, the particles' morphology, yield and breakage rate were comparatively analyzed. The results show that production particle of flutter ball mill has a better uniformity, the production of-325 meshes improves compared with ordinary ball mill and the breakage rate of particles of 120 meshes, 200 meshes and 325 meshes in the flutter ball mill are all higher than ordinary ball mill which means a high breakage speed.In this article, through the simulation analysis of medium's collision energy characteristics and combined with actual grinding experiment, the grinding performance of the flutter ball mill is researched. And it provides the reference for the flutter ball mill's changing grinding performance.
