Safe and reliable operation of the transformer has always been an important issue in the power system, and the transformer failure will generate seriously affectation and economic losses for the stable operation of grid. As China’s power system is in the direction of high pressure, long-distance and intelligent, improving of the voltage level and increasing of the transmission capacity greater needs the normal operation of the transformer. Conventional corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance testing method does not guarantee the reliability and the economy of the power supply system. In order to ensure the normal operation of the variety electrical equipment(including transformers) in the power system, transformer-based monitoring of the state of vibration technology is introduced. The monitoring method complements the monitoring of transformer’s operation status by analyzing the vibration signal of transformer tank surface.In this paper, the author outlines the current situation and characteristics of the monitoring of transformer research, proposed the importance of the transformer condition monitoring, then analyzes the principle of generation and dissemination of transformer vibration signal and the common fault of transformer. Through the mechanical analysis of transformer winding, and take the vibration signal as an example, describes an experiment of transformer winding loose. Finally, build the monitoring software via LabVIEW, combining the good man-machine interface and powerful computing capability, the idea has been realized, analyzed the time and frequency characteristics of transformer vibration signal by Fourier transform techniques method under normal circumstances and transformer winding loose situation, summed up a method to determine the fault of transformer winding loose. The method is simple, and the results show that this method can discriminate states of transformer operation, and then laid the foundation for future research on the transformer fault diagnosis.
