With the development of market economy, the economic effectiveness become the center of power supply company for Constantly developing. And line loss is important component of electric energy resources waste at the process of power transmission, and the major factor which decreased the economical efficiency of power supply. Therefore, measures of loss reduction has being a hot research topic. Although line loss is inevitable power waste at the process of power transmission, but its can be decreased to reasonable value range by take appropriate measures such as boost voltage, var compensation, improved accuracy of measurement and scientific management and maintenance of power grid. At present, for rural grid, due to its widely distributed, small wire cross section, far distant of power transmission, power load decentralized, low power and transformer no-load for long time, which make it still big difficult for management of line loss. There are three parts major content has researched in this paper as follow. Firstly, according to present method and theory of line loss calculation, that is RMS current method, equivalence resistance method, equivalence resistance capacity method and coulometric method, combined practical power distributed and transmission of Tieling area to take theoretical calculation for line loss of rural grid. Secondly, based on the theoretical calculation for line loss, analysis the major reason caused high line loss for rural grid, researched through parallel capacitor to compensate reactive power thus decreased line loss. Finally, take the rural grid of Tieling area as example, the voltage drop has been calculated before and after applied var compensation, and voltage drop has decreased after var compensation, which validated the reasonability of the var compensation design for this area.
