With the development of industrial automation and the highly increased social concerns about the environmental protection, silo has gradually become the preferred method of coal storage for most of the power plants. Coal-storing silo has not only achieved the coal's massive storage but also kept the power plants' environment clean. However, safety accident in respect of silos frequently happens in recent years with the consequences ranging from coal shortage and property loss to plants' shutdown and casualties. Therefore, the silo's safety is of vital importance since it may affect the plants' safety opperation and the field staff's personal safety.This thesis is meant to design and develop an inerting monitoring system of coal-storing silo on the basis of i FIX, and meanwhile, to probe into the solutions of the live process program. With the information collected from the sensor devices of temperature in situ, oxygen, level gage and carbon oxide, etc, conditions of the coal in coal-storing silo can be automatically obtained. As soon as the information is transmitted to the control system, the corresponding solution in accordance to the process program of each parameter will be settled. And then, with the received live signals and solutions, the upper computer will display the on-site state and the alerting signals, meanwhile, the control information will be transmitted back to the Programmable Logic Controller(PLC) by upper computer to achieve the program's control over the electric ball valve, the nitrogen manufacturing system, the explosion door system as well as the bag-type dust remover. Simultaneously, the scheduler of i FIX will be activated and information about the height of level gage, the temperature, the carbon oxide, as well as the alerting signals of the control system will be totally saved in the upper computer, achieving the affective and safe monitoring and fulfilling the purpose of controlling the coal-storing silo.The safety inerting monitoring system of coal-storing silo consists of the safety monitoring system and the safety inerting protection system. The safety monitoring system aims at supervising the basic condition of the coal in the coal-storing silo, monitoring the running condition of the field apparatus, and providing instant feedback of the danger signals of silo and the trouble signals of equipments. On the other hand, the safety inerting protection system is meant to ensure the gas resource of silo's inerting protection gas, including the comprehensive control over the nitrogen manufacturing system and the control over the live nitrogen charging valve. Thus, by combing the inerting monitoring system with the inerting protection system can it be possible to achieve the safe and affective operation of coal-storing silo in the end. The control system developed in this thesis has been put into actual use by some power plant of Huaneng Group and the running result is tested to be good by practice.
