The rapid development of globalization urges our cities and architectures to change dramatically, the conflict between globalization and localization has been becoming increasingly fierce with people unconsciously ignoring the significance of cultural value in the pursuit of economic efficiency and destroying the city original historical and cultural atmosphere by the value of “seek foreign, strange and luxury” in wantonly remove and construction.Nowadays, the Chinese architects try to find a corresponding architectural form to meet the needs of modern life, but also can adapt to the local culture. Then, the native architecture was proposed in that context, while the materials are the material carrier of architectural culture. It is the most direct embodiment of architecture localization to contact the architecture and its natural land with the materials as a link.In architectural creation, the expression of materials means to cause the viewer's own experience, the emotional and cultural resonance in response to local architectural significance. The domestic architectural design and the materials research had been out of touch since the autobiography concept was replaced by the western architectural theory,so the rise of the contemporary materials concept is not only the inheritance of the traditional concept, but also the development of the modern architectural theory. Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study of the material expression in native architecture. The paper is mainly divided into three parts to study the expression of local architecture materials in a historical development concept that from traditional to modern. The first section corresponds to the first chapter. It introduces the background of the study, the origin of the native values of architecture, and the concept of expression through materials, which leads to the topic: how to express local architecture with materials? Besides, some new theses about this research and the technical framework are discussed in this section. The second section analyzes the problems from Chapter Two to Chapter Five.As the theoretical basis of the paper,Chapter Two explains the expression-through-materials theories related to localized buildings, and gives a glance to the relevant studies at home and abroad. In Chapter Three,it traces back to the evolution of material-expression in Chinese traditional architecture. From the evolution process,it sums up an expression-through-materials method where the rationality of structure and the perception of humanities mingle each other in the traditional architecture. And it adopts this method in the analysis of Kang Baiwan Manor and Hong Village.Chapter Four and Five are the main part of the paper.Following the trace of the architectural tradition, the two chapters explore the material-expression theory structurally and culturally in contemporary local architecture, investigating several cases related. The exploration focuses on two aspects—the modern application of traditional materials and the traditional interpretation of modern materials. The third section is about the solutions, corresponding to the sixth chapter. On the basis of relevant theories and the clues in the material-expression of the traditional architecture,it puts forward three strategies to contemporary local architecture. These three strategies are“employing technology based on materials”,“adjusting actively at different times”and“adopting various measures applied to locations”.Then it gives evidence to these strategies by empirical methods. The last section is a conclusion.it summarizes the main ideas of the paper and proposes the things needed improvements. In the end,it briefly points out the subsequent directions in the future.
