Due to low fuel consumption, less emissions, hybrid vehicles are more and more favored by the market these days. In this paper, a new kind of hybrid system, called Four-Mode hybrid vehicle, is studied. It has four driving modes. This paper focused on the following aspects: the structure and working principles of the system, the estimation and optimization of system parameters, drive control strategies, and hardware tests. The main contents of this paper are as follows:Firstly, the structure and working principles of 4M hybrid vehicles are described. The system has four driving modes, which are One-Motor electric driving mode?Series driving mode?Two-Motor electric driving mode?and hybrid driving mode. Then, according to the design requirement, the types of internal combustion engine?Motors?and battery are selected, and the range of their parameters are estimated.Secondly, the simulation model was established for 4M hybrid system. Then the influences of dynamic components' parameters on vehicle performances were studied and the parameters were optimized with orthogonal tests.Thirdly, the control structure of 4M hybrid system was introduced. Then the driving control strategies of 4M hybrid vehicle were established in the environment of Matlab/Simulink.Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform for 4M system is built based on d SPACE, on which the driving control strategies are tested. The hardware-in-the-loop test shows that the control strategies can basically fulfill the control requirements of 4M system. The gear states and driving modes switched reasonably, and ICE and Motors run in their relatively high efficiency areas.
