Magneto-rheological fluid(MRF) is a kind of new intelligent materials which was widely researched, used and has good performance. Its rheological properties are changed under the action of the magnetic field. The MR damper is filled with MRF and it has a lot of advantages compare to common liquid damper, such as simple construction, instant reaction, low power requirements, large damping force and continuously adjustable. It is a typical controllable fluid damper and has a broad prospect in the field of aircraft, automobile and bridge etc.In this paper, a MR damper of hole-type is designed based on the principal theory of MRF and MR damper. The annular clearance channel arounded the piston surface is replaced by the hole-type channel in the piston. Inert gas is loaded directly to buffer with the buffer chamber. The piston is guided without the guide plate which made the structure simplified. The magnetic circuit is designed and optimized by the ANSYS. The magnetic flux density of damping channel has reached to 0.48 T, which is closed to the theoretical value of 0.5T and make the the magnetic circuit efficiency improved. Then, the material and size of the damper is obtained, and make the damper manufactured and assembled. The static and dynamic experiment is experimentalized with the MR damper by the hydraulic vibration control servo test bench. The dampering ratio and dampering force is tested by the changing amplitude, electric current and frequency. Three experiments are experimentalized with the modified diameter of damper holes and decreased number of holes. The experiment showed that between tow different diameters and under the amplitude of 3mm and frequency of 1 Hz, the dampering work of two experiments increased from 4.02 times to 4.5 times and 3.7 times to 5.5 times, when the electric current inereased to 0.7A from 0.5A. The rates are 11.94% and 48.65%. And the rate of the dampering work ranges from 0.7 to 0.9 when the number of holes halved. The experimental data provided a certain reference to the research of the hole-type MR damper. Finally, the research of this paper is summarized and some thoughts is offered for the future research.
