A city is an organic entity that is full of vitality. It is not only a combination of buildings and space but also an outcome of cultural and historical deposits. As an important component of urban space, urban public space is also an important carrier of city life. Urban public space is a complicated and changeable system, with its complication lies in the spatial form and functional mix; meanwhile, the fact that various social, economic and political elements are changing constantly and affecting each other has further complicated it. In urban and rural planning and architecture subjects, many scholars have studied and explored “urban public space” time and time again. Meanwhile, their research perspectives are no longer limited to the design of material space and begin to include impact of non-material elements in public space and establishment of a public space system. In addition to that, the United States has a history of more than two hundred years as one the most developed countries all over the world. With the rapid development of cities, many problems regarding city and urban public space have appeared. The primary objective is this paper is to reflect on rise and fall of urban public space,the space hierarchy and the public life oriented public space design methods of the New York City and conclude the enlightenment for designing and operating urban public space in China.Paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is a summary of the context of the entire thesis; the second chapter on the basis of knowledge and understanding of public life and urban public space,analyzes the structure and the elements of urban public space, and then the values the connection between the urban public space and public life; the third chapter is about the summary of the background and course on urban public space in New York City;,including its economic analysis and cultural environment as well as clues to the history of the development of a longitudinal study of the city of New York City for each historical period characterized by issues, impacts and age factors; The fourth chapter study the urban public space systems from the macro, meso and micro levels of New York City, each level firstly to define its studies scope, and deconstructs content and design method of main features of New York city urban public space system,then cites examples for illustration; the fifth chapter carry on the New York public life system, mainly study that how the public activities carry on in public space and public building.In order to sum up preliminary research on the New York City’s public life and the public life oriented public space design methods.
