Single-lamp monitoring system can achieve the monitoring and automatic inspection of the airfield lighting, which ensuring the normal operation of the airport. Once there is failure happened, the message can be reported to the monitoring center, and then the staff would be informed for repairs. But there are some shortcomings of the traditional single-lamp monitoring system, such as misinformation of the failure, the simple detection function and so on. WSN(Wireless sensor network) as an emerging technology, is more and more used in various fields by its unique advantages. The monitoring system based on WSN is essential for improving the reliability of the monitoring system, enhancing the airport ground support ability and ensuring airplane safety during taking off and landing.Firstly, the routing protocol is explained detailed.To accomplish data collection by utilizing the limited resource in WSNs, and prolong the lifetime of the networks, a WSN routing protocol AL-CADE(Airfield Lighting—Clustering Algorithm based on Distance and Energy) based on logic zones was developed to monitor the airfield lighting in approach zone.In the protocol, the monitoring area was set several small logic zones according to geography locations of the nodes, and there were some advanced nodes placed in the logic zones as relay nodes. The cluster-head number of the nodes was optimized in the elliptical area, and the cluster-head election algorithm based on energy and distribution of nodes was put forward.The simulation results show that the protocol is effective in reducing node energy consumption and prolonging the network lifetime. The monitoring system of airfield lighting is essential for improving the work efficiency as well as guaranteeing ability of maintenance.After the design of the routing protocol finished, the small hardware test is conducted. The feasiblity of the new low-energy routing is verified by futherwork.
