Single-lamp monitoring system can achieve the monitoring and automatic inspection of the airfield lighting, which ensure the normal flight of the airplane. WSN(Wireless sensor network) as an new technology, is more and more used in various fields by its unique advantages. The monitoring system based on WSN is essential for improving the reliability.Firstly, WSN communication protocol is explained detailed. A MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol AL-MAC(Airfield Lighting-MAC) based on logic zones was developed to monitor the airfield lighting in approach zone. In the protocol, the time frame is divided into four parts: Beacon, CAP(Contention Access Period), CFP(Contention Free Period), Inactive. In the beacon period, cluster head periodically broadcast messages to become cluster head node; In the CAP period, common nodes apply slot in competitive way to the cluster head node; In the CFP period, common nodes upload data based slot allocated by the cluster head;In the Inactive period, all the sensor nodes fall asleep. The simulation experiments show that the protocol is effective in reducing the energy consumption and prolonging the network lifetime. After the design of the MAC protocol finished, the small hardware test is conducted.
