To simplify the optimal operation process of the power system and improve the reliability of the optimization results, a superior optimization approach with strong adaptability aimed to obtain the desired satisfactory solution was proposed in this paper, and an improved superior optimization approach was put forward to improving the performance of the optimization methed. performance ranking selection approach and improved performance ranking selection approach were presented to apply the optimization method to multi-objective optimization problems, and then the proposed optimization method applied to different power system optimal operation problems was deeply researched.Firstly, a superior optimization approach with strong adaptability based on p% superior sampling was put forward. The power system optimal operation problems were divided into infinity number and limited number of solutions to discuss the principle of p% superior sampling, the p% was determined through the sufficiency of superior optimization approach. With the small probability and small gap inspection principle as the standard, the quality of the superior optimization approach was verified by the test function. Two cases of p% superior sampling were applied to power system reactive power optimization and distribution network reconfiguration.Secondly, to resolve the optimization problems of higher demanded goal for Superior solution, the improved superior optimization approach was put forward on the basis of superior optimization approach, the filtrating grid was formed by the robustness demand of the control strategy in the solution space, using the integral level of individual in the filtrating grid represented by exemplary base to seek superior “ hypersphere” area ranking in the former p%. Continuing depth optimization after first p% superior sampling in interior of filtrating grid to obtain more satisfactory results. the improved superior optimization approach can be tested by the problem of reactive power optimizationLastly, performance ranking selection approach and improved performance ranking selection approach were proposed to apply superior optimization approach to multi-objective dynamic optimization problem, the application strategy of superior optimization approach that used in dynamic optimization problems was analyzed. The combination of superior optimization approach and selection method of multi-objective Superior solution was applied to dynamic optimal scheduling of the multi-objective power system with wind power-pumped storage-thermal power joint operation.The case study shows that the proposed method is simple in principle, easy programming; The methods were verified strong applicability in application of different power system optimal operation problems.
