The settlement of dam will be large when it is built on the thick overburden. The excavation of overburden leads to a large amount of earthwork, time-consuming and the destruction of the ecological environment. The relevant scholars present “a concrete cover” model of dam structure on building a dam on the thick overburden. A large cover plate is firstly built on the overburden, and then the dam is built on the plate. And a large corridor is reserved in the cover plate, which is used for the construction of cutoff wall. The combination of the cutoff wall, cover plate and face plate makes up a complete anti seepage system. The deformation of the dam which is built on the thick overburden is studied. Then centrifuge model tests were used to study this new concrete face rockfill dam. Three face rockfill dam models were carried out to analyze the dam on the overburden without cover plate, the dam on the overburden add cover plate and soft overburden add cover plate. Based on the results of the finite element numerical analysis and model tests, the deformation and stress of the cover plate and the dam is investigated.(1) The new structure of the faced rockfill dam is studied through the centrifugal model test technology and numerical analysis. It provides the basis for the theoretical study on the new structure of rockfill dam.(2) The results show that the dam settlement decreases after setting up the cover plate on the thick overburden. The settlement of the dam will be larger when the overburden is soft soil.(3) The cutoff wall moves upstream during the construction period when the dam is built on the thick overburden, while the cutoff wall moves downstream during the water storage period. When the plate cover is setting up, the deformation law of cutoff wall is consistent with that without cover plate, but the deformation value becomes relatively less.(4) The largest bending moment appears at the middle of plate during the construction period. The blending moment becomes more uniform during the water storage period.(5) Adding the cover plate on the overburden has little effect on the strain of the panel. The strain of the panel is totally less under its own gravity during the construction period. In the storage period, Panel strain value is larger at the lower middle position under the action of the upper water load.
