Comparative Study On Decorative Elements Of Arcade In Different Regions Of Lingnan And Its Design Practice

This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of the architectural style and decorative elements of arcades in Lingnan areas,and discusses how the culture and decorative elements of arcades can be integrated in the revamp of urban landscapes and age-old architectures,so as to provide related theoretical basis and practical experience of design for the cultural inheritance and feature creation in urban areas.Specifically,based on the analysis of the similarities and differences of the decorative elements of arcades in Fujian Province,Guangxi Province and Guangdong Province,and the survey of status quo of Caiyuan North Street,Zhongshan Second Road in Guangzhou,this thesis aims at the application of decorative elements of arcades in Lingnan region,and studies of the social and practical values in the revamp and creative design of the old towns in Guangzhou City in theory and practice.This thesis is sectioned into four parts.The first part is the introduction to the background of arcades in Lingnan region,and the importance of the inheritance and protection for arcades to pass on the historical and cultural heritage of the urban city.The second part analyses the characteristics of arcades in Lingnan region in terms of decorative elements.Given that the elements are numerous,four typical types are specifically selected to discuss in this thesis,namely the elements of Shanhua(architectural feature),window and window frame,railing of balcony and pillar.Based on this analysis,the author summarizes their styles and features.The third part compares the decorative elements among the arcades in Fujian,Guangxi and Guangdong,and gathers their similarities and differences.The last part introduces the utilization of decorative elements of arcades to the revamp of Caiyuan North Street,Zhongshan Second Road in Guangzhou,which applies the theoretical achievement ofthis thesis to an actual case.Therefore,this thesis not only provides theoretical basis for the study on the culture of arcades,but also the practical design experience for the transformation of a modern city into a famous city with rich traditional cultures.
