The intersection is known as the "throat zone" of urban road network, which is the place where the traffic flow gather and disperse in different directions. It is not only the crux of traffic congestion but also the place where traffic accidents most likely to happen. If the signal setting is not appropriate at the intersection,it is easy to induce congestion or accidents, and thus affect the traffic condition of the entire artery or even the whole region. So it is of great significance to improve the traffic control measures, especially the intersection signal control scheme for the road traffic safety and security.Traffic network is a complex system which is difficult to establish an accurate mathematical model.Based on this,Decentralized Model-Free Adaptive Control algorithm is used for multi-intersections signal control. The algorithm does not need mathematical modeling of the traffic system, and uses the idea of decentralized control to design the controller which is simpler and more practical compared to the centralized controller. The main content of this paper can be concluded as follows:Firstly, based on the original Decentralized Model-Free Adaptive Control algorithm, and considering the problems in the practical application of the algorithm, the original algorithm is improved in this paper.First, considering the effect of the distance between the intersections on the interconnect-influence term, the concept of"distance penalty factor" is proposed.Second,in order to prevent the excessive changes of green time which has a negative impact on the traffic state, the green time change constraint is added to the algorithm.Secondly, the traffic signal control problem is studied using the microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM which constructs a small region of the traffic network of Wangjing area in Beijing. And the algorithm is implemented by using VB and Matlab mixed programming. The simulation results show that the control algorithm can effectively control the signal system of multi-intersections road network in VISSIM,and achieve good control performance. Finally, the GRANDTRANS traffic control system which is developed by Hangzhou Ding Peng Traffic Technology Co.,Ltd.is utilized to build the semi-physical simulation platform. The secondary development of the traffic control system has been done and verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the control algorithm on the real traffic signal controller.
