Damage investigation of sturcture is the foundation of the ancient building protection and repairment.Since the beginning of the 20th century, research on the how to assess the safety of the ancient buildings accurately has been explored.According to the existing related criterions, the assessment of ancient buildings includes the damage assessment of the whole structure and the single members, and damage assessment of the single wooden members incledes the assment of the load-bearing members and the peripheral structural. In consideration of the large number of projects included in the damage assessment, the kinds of the detecting instructures, the complex operation, and the huge cost,it is necessary to find a rapid general survey method of damages for the daily detection. At first, this paper studies the current relevant specification, find the important test of the key load-bearing structural members.A rapid general survey method of damages and a matched appraisal method of damage degree are established.According to the rapid general survey method,we surveyed the load-bearing columns, the main beams, longitudinal beams and the brackets of the Feiyun Tower.Using the survey data and in accordance with the damage degree appraisal method,we get the damage grade of the structural member, which can be used as evidences for the protection and repair in the future. Some structural members which are rated as risk state are investigated by using the high accurate nondestructive testing methods.Result shows that a small fraction of the structural members are in risk, which means that the mentioned method need to be improved.According to the result of the nondestructive test,we improve the rapid general damage state survey method and appraisal. Then the accuracy of the method can be improved.
