Intersection is the bottleneck of urban arterials. If the intersection congestion could be solved, traffic status of oversaturated urban arterials would be greatly improved.Among the reasons for intersection congestion, the main one is unreasonable signal control. Therefore, adjusting intersection signal control could,to a certain degree, ease congestion of oversaturated urban arterials.Starting from the selection of indicators, this paper eventually selects three indicators as the research objects, including vehicle output, average vehicle delay, and the average pedestrian delay, takes the three indicators selected as the objects of multi-objective optimization, and then establishes the multi-objective optimization model.Particle swarm optimization algorithm is applied to get the value of single intersection single objective function, single intersection multi-objective function, and urban arterials multi-objective function respectively, which is implemented based on MATLAB.The results of the study are:first, through reviewing literature, the article selects 11 indicators to evaluate control effect of signal, and ultimately chooses three best indicators for the evaluation of signal control effect through screening and analysing questionnaires: vehicle output, vehicle delay, pedestrian delay. The correlation coefficients among them are low,and the environmental benefit, the benefit of motor vehicle and pedestrian benefit are taken into consideration comprehensively;second, the multi-objective optimization model is used for the case study, namely using multi-objective optimization model to solve the traffic congestion problem of Weijin road in TianJin.The example of Weijin road in Tianjin is to verify the validity of the model, which could prove that the urban arterial multi-objective optimization model is better than others.
