Bentonite clays consisting mainly of montmorillonite are utilized in various engineering applications.Bentonite is a good adsorbent,which can absorb harmful and noxious substances,and can be used as a remedy for infections,indigestion,and other medical problems both by applying wet clay topically to the skin as a poultice and by ingesting it.Bentonite can be used as additive in cosmetics and as a clarifying agent for wine clarification.However,natural bentonites contain many kinds of impurities such as quartz,cristobalite,feldspar,zeolite,calcite etc.,which can decrease performance of the bentonite.Furthermore,quartz and cristobalite are carcinogenic.Therefore purification of removal of the impurities in bentonite is critical to its applications.It is necessary that purify the bentonite before using it.Of all impurities,it is most difficult to get rid of the a-cristobalite from the bentonite,because of its tiny particles.Although the bentonite from Shangtianti has been developed for many years,there is not a high technological and quality products,the advantage resources has not been reasonable used.There is still lots of problems such as low technology level,poor economic resources are wasted etc..For improving this situation and application of basic research,mineralogy and purification studies of the Shangtianti mine would be carried out,which can provide the basis for in-depth development and use of the mine.In this paper,a systematic process mineralogical analysis of bentonite in the area was carried out and the results showed that the main impurity of this calcium bentonite would be quartz.It is found that the size of cristobalite particles was small and would be together with the montmorillonite and adsorbed on around of montmorillonite or between the layers,which is difficult to remove by ordinary physicalsettlement purification.In order to investigate the dispersion of the bentonite montmorillonite and cristobalite impurities.The optimal decentralized purification conditions was found by decentralized purification experiments,that is using sodium pyrophosphate as a dispersing agent,0.3%,4%pulp density,the volume of purified samples montmorillonite obtained would be 91.34%.On the basis of the study on purification and dispersion,hydraulic cyclone separation was used for purifing bentonite,the optimum conditions were as follows:sodium pyrophosphate dispersant,the amount of 0.3%,the ?50 cyclone to mine pressure is 0.30Mp,the ?25 cyclone to mine pressure is 0.40Mpa,and the ?10 cyclone to mine pressure is 1.00Mpa.Three cyclone series connection,the volume of montmorillonite was 92.44%,and the yield 23.33%.This investigation results would be significance for full using the bentonite resources of Shangtianti and improving the added value of bentonite mineral,helped to broaden its scope of application and changed the resource advantage into economic advantage as well.
