Wave propulsion is a device that can absorb wave energy and directly convert it into forward thrust, which is a effective way for the technology of energy conservation and emission reduction. EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) has been executed compulsively in 2015, the new design ship whose EEDI exceeds the standard will not be approved in Classification Society or IMO, which brings a big challenge to ship design. As one of the technology of green ship, wave propulsion has a great significant to decreasing EEDI and realizing energy saving and emission reduction. The existing wave propulsion have two styles, active and passive. The active device is very complex and expensive, and the passive device is more simple and cheaper with a generally lower efficiency. Those are the reasons why the wave propulsion does not be used widely. Aiming at the low efficiency of the passive wave propulsion, these works are done in the paper.(1) The research results and existing ways to wave propulsion were summarized.(2) According to the theory of wave propulsive,A new wave propulsion whose attack angle of oscillating hydrofoil is adjusted by a floater is designed.(3) According to the characteristic of the new wave propulsion, of which the propulsive performance is studied by model test.(4) The influence of environment parameter and structural parameter on propulsive performance is analyzed.(5) The influence of the floater on propulsive performance is summarized through a comparison between the traditional hydrofoil moving with wave and hydrofoil adjusted by floater.(6) According to the advantage and disadvantage of the new wave propulsion, a new way application to the new wave propulsion is design by hiding the floater.
