Fire is a major threat to ship safety. The special cabin structure, the restricted openings, and the ventilation conditions will generate huge impact on the fire behavior. So it has important significance to study the characteristics of special ship' cabin fires, and pertinently design the smoke control strategies. In this paper, experimental and numerical methods are applied to study the fire characteristics of the typical flattened large ship cabin and the corresponding solutions.Firstly, mathematical models and calculation methods which are proper to ship fires are constructed. Secondly, fire experiments of different fire intensity are conducted in large space of flat large cabin under confined space. The movement of smoke is analyzed, and the validity of the mathematical models and calculation methods is verified by the experimental results. Thirdly, the flattened large ship cabin of LPD-17, San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is chosen for the study, and numerical techniques are used to simulate the heat flow field, including the hull tail dock doors , the cabin ventilation, the influence of ambient wind on the characteristics. Finally, the damages to the lower part of ship cabin under different conditions are determined.According to the characteristics of heat flow field in the flattened large ship cabin, smoke control strategies are raised respectively when the stern gate opening and closing, and verified the effectiveness. This work can provide theoretical guidance for the flattened large ship cabin fires, and provide technical reference for the strategies of fire response and smoke control.
