In recent years, many cities built a large number of city expressway to alleviate the problem of traffic congestion in the city, which has played a significant improvement effect to the congestion problem in the case of low vehicle saturation. But due to generally improve of the economic level in our country, private cars have gradually entered into every family,this makes the rapid growth of car ownership. In expressway a lot of serious traffic congestion problems happened on the peak period. And those problems mostly concentrated in the merging area of expressway."Study on the design and key traffic control indicators of merging area in expressway"was chosen as the title of this paper. First of all, using the UAV aerial and the traffic surveillance video to get the vehicle video of the merging area. And then, the vehicle moving data of the merging area is obtained by the process of traffic video in AutoScope2004 software. Through artificial observation analysis of video data, get the characteristics of traffic behavior in merging area. The disadvantages of the gap acceptance theory are summarized by the data analysis and the characteristics of traffic behavior, Based on the traffic flow Breakdown theory, this paper puts forward the research method of the design and traffic control key indicators of merging area in expressway, and puts forward the design method of traffic congestion and traffic control based on Breakdown theory. In addition, for the design of merging area, the calculation method of accelerating lane length design in merging area is finally put forward. In terms of traffic control in the merging area, we study the ramp control method in the merging area, and for the flow control a calculation method for the determination of the threshold value of the traffic volume on the ramp is put forward,for the merge control, build a system called " Control of lifting and isolating piles in Urban Expressway". The above methods mainly use the theory of traffic flow Breakdown theory,and then examples are given to verify the rationality of the conclusions. Finally, based on the cellular automata theory with the help of MATLAB software, the simulation results are analyzed. The simulation results show that the results obtained in this paper are scientific and reasonable. The final results show that the conclusions of this paper can be of some value to the design and traffic control key indicators of merging area in expressway.
