Research On The Application Of Sea Ice Information For Navigating In The Key Sea Areas Of Arctic Northeast Passage

In recent years, with the continuous development of global warming and the accelerated ablation of Arctic sea ice, the feasibility of navigation through the Arctic Passage attracts more and more people’s attention. Compared with Northwest Passage,Northeast Passage owns perfect navigation infrastructure and seaworthy terrain conditions, therefore the Northeast Passage was selected as the research object of this paper. Whether the Northeast Passage will be completely navigable or not mainly depends on the sea ice conditions of several sea areas, which are the key sea areas to be discussed and ascertained. In addition, the websites which could provide ice information of the key sea areas were collected, and the ice information were analyzed and applied.In the specific research process, this paper first ascertained the key sea areas of the Northeast Passage by analysing the navigable period of each area on the Northeast Passage according to the latest Admiralty Sailing Directions and the research results of domestic and foreign scholars on sea ice change rule in recent years; and then enumerated 6 websites which provide detailed information on sea ice conditions by analysing the ways of obtaining sea ice information in the key sea areas, and gave visual introduction to how to use them; and then focusing on the key sea areas, collected sea ice satellite images of the last 9 years supplying by the Bremen University website based on the satellite data, and analyzed and summarized the regularity and connectivity of the sea ice change rule by the method of historical statistics and ascertained the navigable time window of the key sea areas; finaly, in order to determine the ship could sail through the Northeast Passage or not, this paper proposed a method to determine it by inquiring the sea ice information, and introduced the application process.The results of this study have important reference value for the shipping enterprise administer and ship officer determining the ship could sail through the Northeast Passage or not and designing the ice zone route by obtaining the sea ice information of the key sea areas when it’s close to the start date of the navigable time window.
